Melpomene coat hanger by Studio BBPR for Artemide, 1970s
This sculptural floor-standing coat hanger was designed by the architects of Studio BBPR in the late 1960s and produced in the 1970s by Artemide.
Consisting of a burnished chrome-plated brass frame, it has an important visual presence, reminiscent of art-deco in contrast to the main design trends of the 1970s.
Functionally, the coat stand allows 6 coats to be hung comfortably, without creasing thanks to the rounded hangers, and also has 6 smaller hooks where scarves and bags can be hung.
The piece is in excellent structural condition, with a definite patina of time due to oxidation and normal signs of wear.
The BBPR group, formed by Gian Luigi Banfi, Lodovico Barbiano di Belgiojoso, Enrico Peressutti, and Ernesto Nathan Rogers, was one of the most important Italian and European architectural firms as well as a leading exponent of modernism. His collaboration with Artemide led to a small series of objects.
