Pair of one-off Portoro marble bookends by Will West
This pair of one-off bookends in solid Portoro marble was handcrafted by English artist Will West as part of his 2023 exhibition Stoppable, curated by 1+1 Gallery and presented at Oxilia Gallery in Milan.
The design plays on paradox: a solid geometric block — the very symbol of stability — here rests in precarious equilibrium thanks to a hidden angled base plate. The result is subtly unsettling, as the objects appear on the verge of falling. The raw, fractured top edges contrast with the polished sides, highlighting the dramatic golden veining typical of Portoro marble.
In Stoppable, West explored two quintessentially accessory objects — the bookend and the doorstop — elevating them into sculptural statements. Each work in the series is carved from solid marble, entirely handcrafted, and unique in weight, proportion, and finish.
