From the 2023 “Stoppable” series by contemporary artist and designer Will West, this sculptural doorstop is carved from Portoro marble—Italy’s prized black stone distinguished by warm golden veining from Liguria. The piece was presented with other works from the same series in our homonymous exhibition in collaboration with Oxilia Gallery, each one exploring the threshold between functional object and intimate sculpture.
The block’s vertical stance and crisp geometry are counterpointed by a top surface purposely left raw, retaining quarry texture and a sense of geological time. All remaining faces are finely polished to a deep gloss that activates the marble’s variegated veining. A subtle chamfer acts as a finger grip, making the piece easy to lift and set in place while preserving its monolithic clarity.
Executed in 2023 and self-produced in the studio, "Stoppable #3" demonstrates careful stone-working: precise planar faces, softly eased edges, and a controlled dialogue between rough and refined finishes. Condition is new; any minute irregularities at the raw top are intentional traces of the material.
Both practical and collectible, this doorstop exemplifies contemporary Italian marble craft and West’s sensitivity to weight, touch, and daily use. An elegant accent for interiors, it reads as a compact column of dark matter shot through with gold. A remarkable example of Italian design merging functional intelligence and aesthetic refinement.
