Stilnovo
Stilnovo is an Italian lighting company founded in the late 1940s—widely dated to 1946 in Milan by Bruno Gatta—that helped define the technical, architectural character of post-war illumination. Through the 1950s and well into the 1960s, the firm pursued a deliberate policy of anonymity: designer names were not indicated and “Stilnovo” acted simultaneously as producer and author, emphasizing collective industrial research. This early phase—distinguished by rigorously engineered luminaires in painted metal, brass, and glass with opaline or prismatic diffusers—is today the most sought after by collectors. From the late 1960s, the company shifted to named collaborations, engaging figures such as Joe Colombo and the trio De Pas, D’Urbino & Lomazzi, aligning with the era’s embrace of auteur design. Across domestic and contract projects, Stilnovo balanced rational construction with adjustable, task-oriented light—swivels, telescopic stems, and modular components. The brand’s catalog remains a touchstone in the discourse on Italian modern lighting for its blend of technical clarity and refined form.
