Large stoneware cachepot
Tall and important stoneware vase by the Italian ceramic master Carlo Zauli, from a private collection on the Como Lake. This piece were crafted in circa 1960, when Zauli was already using grès but didn't concentrate only on his famous "Bianco Zauli" finish. The vase has a light brown dotted decoration, with a darker stripe on in its central part. As a unexpected contrast, the inside of the vase is enameled in a beautiful ultramarine blue. From the same provenance, we also have a large cachetpot with the same light brown finishing (picture 3). Signed under the base.
Carlo Zauli (1926-2002), from Faenza, was one of the greatest Italian ceramists of the 20th century, but also to all intents and purposes a sculptor and an artist. Zauli, who studied with Anselmo Bucci as a boy, was later deported to Germany at a very young age. On his return, he became an assistant to Angelo Biancini. In 1950 he participated in the founding of the Nuova Ca' Pirota. During the 1950s he exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Italy and abroad. Thanks also to the influence of Albert Diato, Zauli began to experiment with the use of a new material, stoneware. The decoration also increasingly shifted from informal signs to a minimalism that concentrated on single-colour tones. From the second half of the 1960s this colour became white, with a particular finish that became known as 'Bianco Zauli'. The return to the use of colour would only come at the end of the 1970s, but in the meantime the ceramist's activity had given way to that of a sculptor, with works of large dimensions and an always intense exhibition activity. By the 1980s and 1990s, Zauli was recognised worldwide as one of the greatest formal innovators in ceramics. Today, the Carlo Zauli Foundation is still active in Faenza, in the premises of the former Nuova Ca' Pirota.
