“Celestia” ceiling lamp by Afra & Tobia Scarpa for Flos 1980s
This rare extralarge ceiling light was designed by architects Afra Bianchin and Tobia Scarpa for Flos in 1982, and is known as “Celestia.”
Part of the long and fruitful collaboration between the two designers and the lighting company, “Celestia” is a lamp constructed as simply as it is ingeniously, drawing inspiration from the structure of a common umbrella.
Eleven chrome-plated metal slats are press-fitted into the lamp holder body, made of white enameled metal, from which a white fabric edged in gray is hung. The central part of the fabric is then attached to the central body by buttoning it down, thanks to click buttons placed on the fabric and the lamp holder.
This chandelier is in excellent vintage condition, since it is a stock item from a lighting store. On the fabric shade and on the lamp holder are the Flos labels.
The lamp fits 6 E16 bulbs.
Because of its large size, it is also an ideal choice for lighting a large room with a not-too-high ceiling, where there would be no room for a pendant lamp.
