Unique spatialist ceramic sculpture
Important ceramic sculpture with a spatialist inspiration, for example from the works of Lucio Fontana. It features a color gradient decor on the sides, and black and white decor on the top, of an informal taste. Large in size, this one-off piece, coming from a private apartment in Milan, has a striking apperance. Dated 1961 and signed Magazzù.
Although we couldn't find any pubblication of the piece, it is very likely a work by Gaetano Magazzù (1911-2011), a ceramicist that studied at Accademia delle Belle Arti in Venice, and started to work very young with Ceramiche Artistiche Lenci, in Turin. From 1932 he moves to Deruta, where he collaborates with several sister companies under the C.I.M.A. banner. After the second world war, he moves to the U.S.A. where he lives and works succesfully until 1969, when he returns to Italy with an exhibition at Galleria Manzoni, Milan. In the 1970s, he holds exhibitions in Taormina and Messina.
