Designed in the late 1980s during Mario Bellini’s fruitful collaboration with Vitra, the “Onda” office armchair belongs to his first comprehensive series of executive seating and systems developed with the Swiss manufacturer. Conceived alongside models such as Figura, Persona and Imago, the Onda reflects Bellini’s research into ergonomics, sculptural structure and refined upholstery for the contemporary workplace.
A black, varnished steel frame defines the chair’s architectural stance, with distinctive seat-support details that give the profile a dynamic, wave-like rhythm. The seat and backrest are generously padded in rubber foam and upholstered in a high-quality grey-blue fabric; both covers are removable and washable for practical upkeep. Plastic-sheathed armrests complete the composition, balancing comfort and durability.
Each chair in this set was produced in 1989, carries the original Vitra label under the seat, and is now out of production. Offered in excellent vintage condition with no significant wear, the pieces deliver assured ergonomics and long-term comfort—qualities consistent with Bellini’s human-centered approach to office design. Chairs are sold separately.
Vitra’s late-20th-century office programs are regarded for pairing advanced industrial know-how with collaborations by leading designers; Bellini’s contributions stand among the most incisive of the period. Collectors and design-led interiors will appreciate the model’s crisp lines, functional intelligence and ready usability today.
