Designed by Vico Magistretti in 1979 and produced by Alias in the early 1980s, the “Broomstick” series emerged from the designer’s London tenure at the Royal College of Art. Tasked with furnishing his temporary apartment, Magistretti conceived a suite of essential furnishings built from elements recalling an everyday object—the broom—an approach that distilled form and function with characteristic clarity. The name “Broomstick” was suggested by his friend George Nelson, underscoring the series’ international dialogue within late-20th-century design.
This low table, model "Gobi" presents a black-lacquered walnut structure articulated by cylindrical elements and a crisp white laminated top. The generous 128 × 128 cm plane and low 45 cm stance create a balanced, architectural presence—graphic yet tactile—suited to living spaces or gallery settings. The restrained palette and precise joinery emphasize Magistretti’s pragmatic elegance and Alias’s refined production values.
Produced only for a short period, the Broomstick series is today comparatively scarce on the secondary market; this example is preowned and comes from old stock discovered at a furniture shop in Bologna. Out of production. Condition is consistent with age, with light, honest patina typical of period varnished wood and laminate.
